A vertical axis wind turbine is essentially a wind turbine in which the rotor shaft is installed in an upright position. It allows it to generate electricity regardless of which direction the wind is coming from. This type of vertical wind turbine offers the advantage of being able to produce electricity even in places with low wind.
Types of vertical wind turbine
To explain how a vertical wind turbine works you must know that there are basically two types of vertical wind turbines: the Savonius wind turbine and the Darrieus wind turbine model.
A Savonius wind turbine is basically a gallon of water split in half, where each half has been mounted on the vertical axis in an outdated manner; that is essentially the Savonius wind turbine. In fact, this type of vertical turbine closely resembles an anemometer and even many of the wind turbines are Savonius. This type of wind turbine is simpler, its technology is not as advanced and they are often inefficient.
The Darrieus wind turbine, which is a mill that looks like an egg beater, is basically a turbine with two blades fixed vertically and that rotate around the axis. This type of wind turbines employs an air flow design, and works in the same way as an airplane wing. The airflow design of the blades of a Darrieus vertical turbine consists of a flat and a curved side. The result that is obtained when the wind passes through each side of the blade is known as “rising.”These types of vertical wind turbines are mostly used for alternative renewable energy sources.
